Statement of Intent 1 & 2
Poster _ 2022

When waves of light are received in the lens of the eye, our brain interprets them as colours. (Hornung, 2012) Thousands of different colours may be seen in a single day, making our world vivid and vibrant. People frequently underestimate the power of colours, with many assuming they are nothing more than a breathtaking result of light refraction, yet few realise how this vast spectrum affects practically every aspect of our lives. (Gupta,2020) “Colour provokes a psychic vibration. Colour hides a power still unknown but real, which acts on every part of the human body.” said Wassily Kandinsky, a painter and art theorist.
In graphic design, colour plays a very important role, and it is a crucial element in any design. Colours have such a significant manipulative power because they can impact our perception, emotions, mood, and even decisions. As a designer, we use colour as a communication tool to express messages that words, languages and images can't. Each colour has its own meaning and symbolism, and each colour conveys a distinct message. As a result, using appropriate colours enables us to communicate our intended messages to the audience more effectively and swiftly. Colour speaks volume, it is a powerful tool that designers can use to call attention to something, reflect frustrations and injustices, raise awareness, and elicit emotions. There is still more to explore about the potential of colours in future design projects.

Statement of Intent 2
Through all these projects I worked on during my final year of degree study, I explored and experimented with colours from a variety of angles and viewpoints, as well as trying out various approaches to create designs that are more effective and impactful through colour. All these projects helped me better define myself and gave me a clearer idea of what I’m interested in and what I hope to do in the future.

In comparison to last semester, the exploration and experimentation of colour is more in-depth this semester. Once again, I realised that colour is far more powerful than we previously thought. It has a huge impact on our perception, emotions, mood, and even decisions. I aspire to be a designer who knows how to use colour in different design projects to effectively convey my thoughts and message to the audience while also evoking certain emotions.

Different approaches and media, including photography, publication, and illustrations, were explored throughout the year. Through all of these projects, a wealth of knowledge and experience was gained. I found that illustrations, especially hand-drawn illustrations and children’s book illustrations, piqued my interest the most, but I’m also willing and eager to learn more about other types of design, such as packaging design and branding.
