Costumes serve as a visual representation of ethnicity and it is the carrier of ethnic culture. Hence, I chose to explore and experiment with the colours and patterns of traditional costumes from different Malaysian ethnic groups in this project, to let more people know that Malaysia is more diverse than only Malay, Chinese, and Indians.

I observed the different patterns and sketched them out.

My idea is to incorporate patterns and colours into the poster. These are the initial ideas and sketches for the poster:

And I came up with my first digital tryout. But I found out a more raw art style would be more suitable for the poster. So I came up with another idea for poster design. Other than the poster, my initial idea was to do embroidery/ display/ patches/ exhibition, but lastly I decided to design a series of postcards as they are more useful and meaningful. Incorporating patterns into illustrations of several Malaysian traditional games and musical instruments is the idea behind postcard design.
These were my initial tryouts:

And I came up with the postcard designs.

Some amendments were made to give the back design of the cards a more original and raw appearance.
